A closet system from a box store comes in fixed widths and leaves a dead gap at one end. Built cabinetry does not. We measure the room, work out what actually goes in it, and build to the wall.
The same applies to the rooms people forget: the pantry, the mudroom, the laundry. They take the daily traffic of the house and they are usually the last thing anyone designs.

Hanging at two heights where it earns its place, drawer banks with jewellery and watch inserts, shoe shelving sized to actual shoes, and an island if the room can take one.
Pantries
Roll-out shelving, deep drawers for bulk, appliance garages, and a counter for the things that never get put away. A pantry wall often does more for a kitchen than another run of uppers.

For a reach-in on a tight budget, a good wire system is honest value. For a walk-in, a pantry, or anywhere the cabinetry is visible from the room, built storage uses the full width, holds more, and does not sag.
